FAQ

For more than 20 years, the Westwood Magnolia Parkway Improvement District (WMPID) has led the way on projects that enhance the business community and improve the quality of life for residents in the area around the intersection of Farm Market Roads 1488 and 2978. Through infrastructure improvements, community support, and construction projects, we have helped beautify, protect, and enhance an area that has grown to include nearly 3,000 acres between Conroe, Magnolia, and The Woodlands. FAQ

Since its founding in 2003, the WMPID has supported infrastructure and public safety projects in its service area. As part of a partnership among local governments and the State of Texas, WMPID focuses on local projects that directly improve the business and community environment for those who live, work, and shop in the area. These projects have resulted in significant revenue increases at the Westwood Village Shopping Center, increased public safety, and improved the overall appearance of the district.

Amenities include a farmers market, hiking trails in the Lake Creek Greenway, several golf clubs, retail and dining options, and local community events. Housing options range from workforce housing to luxury homes, all connected to The Woodlands via Research Forest Drive. Schools are served by Magnolia ISD and Conroe ISD, with colleges located within a 20-minute drive. Healthcare providers in the area include Conroe Regional, Houston Methodist, Texas Children’s, Memorial Hermann, and several urgent care centers.

Because we have a strictly local focus, WMPID can quickly identify and act to address needs within the District. From public safety to improved access to overall beautification, WMPID keeps local dollars local and improves the quality of life for all residents and visitors to the district.

WMPID does not charge any property taxes or collect fees. The District funds its projects by collecting 1 cent of the sales tax charged on retail sales within the District and rebates half a cent of that revenue to the City of Conroe.

WMPID actively invests in projects that improve the quality of life for people who live in or visit the District. Our focus on public safety – WMPID has funded four sheriff’s deputies and five patrol cars to provide additional police patrolling in the District as well as  $350,000 ladder truck to ensure firefighters can adequately protect new high-rise construction – ensures that residents and visitors can easily reach local businesses, the farmer’s market, and events. Further, we have a vision of creating a true parkway with attractive landscaping and lighting, signage, holiday decorations, bike lanes, and sidewalks designed to make the District a more enjoyable place to live.

WMPID has undertaken a number of projects to improve conditions within the district. These include:

  • Expanding Egypt Lane to improve access from a main artery road and make it easier for parents to get to Ellisor Elementary School. This project also diverted drainage from retention ponds that were being overwhelmed by heavy flow.
  • Working with the developers of the Westwood Village Shopping Center to allocate space for a sheriff substation and paying the salary of four sheriff’s department deputies and administrative staff at the storefront.
  • Participating in the extension of Woodtrace Boulevard to help add a much-needed east-west connection for the county. WMPID funded a $7.2 million section of the project from FM2978 to Dobbin-Huffsmith.

WMPID is involved in the planning of a new, 370-acre regional park to serve the residents of Montgomery County and beyond. The plan currently calls for 40 acres of playgrounds, pickleball courts, sports fields, paved trails, a splash pad, an amphitheater, picnic areas, and pavilions anchored by a large, multi-use, nature-focused community center. WMPID also continues to expand its territory, allowing the District to complete additional beautification projects. We will also continue to invest in safety while improving access to the District and fulfilling its mission as a gateway to the Woodlands and Woodforest.
